Welcome to English Online at Bintang Bahasa. This is still just a sampling of all the material we have so visit us often to try new material as we get it uploaded, and please send us your comments and let us know how we're doing.

Typically, most English training is like a 'renovation job'; you have to 'tear out' all the rotten stuff, redo the foundations, rewire everything, reinforce all the basic structure, then begin the finishing work.

It's always surprising that even advanced students and experienced teachers still make basic, simple mistakes that could have been avoided if taught correctly in the first place. If you want to read more about our philosophies on learning languages you can go here: Philosophies on Learning Languages

Of course learning a language with a private native speaker teacher is ideal, but even then, without good material and a good teacher, the results will still be limited. If you can afford to take classes, or can convince your boss to provide training for the staff, then we'd be glad to help.  email us

That said, it is possible to learn a language, and learn it well, without a teacher, and we want to show you how. We will take you step by step, from whatever you're currently at to being able to speak English easily and naturally. One of the best ways to help achieve that is working with movies.

Working with Movies:

Finding Nemo

Movies are actually an excellent way for students to improve their English and help it become more natural. Typically they can mostly understand it when reading it, but they can't catch the audio and they couldn't express the same ideas correctly or naturally themselves. These exercises allow them to work on pronunciation and expressions and advanced vocabulary while practicing basic grammar aspects at the same time.

TOEFL and TOEIC Training:

Sample TOEFL

We also provide training for TOEFL and TOEIC tests, and most importantly, provide clear explanations and provide similar type tests but with very basic material. What is being tested is often very basic concepts but is 'disguised' in complicated sentences with advanced vocabulary.

Writing and Error Corrections:

Sample Discussion

We also encourage discussions and, if you provide us with your thoughts and comments in both English and Indonesian, then we will make corrections and post it for everyone to learn from.

Moving around the site/program:

To move around the site (or the program if you're using it offline), follow the links on the pages or use the navigator bar shown in the upper left corner.

We try to take students 'step by step' in their learning, but also want to allow an easy way to move around to any of your favourite areas.

Empress Orchid:

Empress Orchid

These exercises are very useful because they focus on 'simple' aspects of grammar which most students have continual difficulty with, while at the same time challenging their reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Dialogue Training:

New!! Listen to corrections of Iwan's English.

Level 0
Level 2

These basic dialogues are extremely effective for students of all levels. For beginners they are excellent training to 'activate' their English. For advanced students they are excellent training to identify and focus on consistent mistakes. The exercises are done either as a full translation or fill in the missing parts. Level 1

Business Communication:

Sample Letter

This sample letter shows how ideas are often poorly or incorrectly expressed, and points out the errors one by one. Using actual communication from employees we help companies build up a training database for all employees to use on the company intranet.

Training Booklets:

Booklet 2

This shows a sample of one of our booklets which stimulates intuitive learning. Expressions and sentence patterns are 'set' in place by having students read dialogues out loud, focusing on pronunciation, rhythm and expression.

Summar Sheets:

Notes 1

By hightlighting common mistakes students are given a focus of what not to do. They also then have a reference sheet when trying to correct their own mistakes in other exercises. Making students find and correct their own mistakes is a very important element not just in language learning but in all job related tasks.

Tenses and Grammar:

The trouble with tenses and grammar is that students learn the rules but don't understand the ideas that are being expressed in connection to the rule. In Indonesia, they often don't learn the rules correctly either because of mistakes in their textbooks and by their teachers!

To review the basic tenses from a new perspective, visit Making Sense of Tenses. Then, for some practice go to a simple dialogue focusing on the one verb 'sit'

For beginners, we take them step by step in reviewing tenses and other grammar rules. We then give them simple, focused exercises, then mixed exercises of gradually increasing difficulty thus continually reinforcing the foundation until it's completely understood. Go to Tenses Index.

We also provide a summary of all the various grammar rules for students to review and use as a reference but we never focus on this aspect.

Searching for a word or phrase:   (online only)

Not sure how to say something in Bahasa or in English? Google is kindly helping us help you. Search for "sudah makan english" and what do you get? It's actually something that's searched for a lot apparently, along with "english tenses". If you search our site for "sudah makan" you'll get a variety of pages, all showing that "Sudah makan?" means "Have you eaten?" OR "Did you eat?" but we'd usually say, "Did you have lunch/breakfast?" or "Have you had lunch/breakfast?" The obvious question now is when do you use which one? When do you say "Have you...?" and when do you say "Did you...?" For that answer, you have to go to our explanation of English tenses!

Please note: We're still setting this up, and it takes a while before Google crawls all our pages and lists the information but once they do it's a fantastic little way to figure out "How do you say ....?"
